Suspected gunmen attacked police officers at a checkpoint in Ipele Junction, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, leaving two officers and a civilian injured.

The assailants, reportedly three in number and riding a motorcycle, opened fire on operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol while they were on duty at the checkpoint. A female bystander, identified only as Taiwo, was also hit during the attack.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Kazeem, said the officers were targeted while performing their lawful duties.

“The operatives responded swiftly and were able to repel the attackers. All the injured victims were immediately rushed to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” Kazeem said.

He added that one of the suspects, identified as Nwabali, was arrested during the operation, and the motorcycle used in the attack was recovered.

“The suspect is presently in custody and has made useful statements that are aiding ongoing efforts to apprehend the fleeing accomplices,” Kazeem added. He noted that Nwabali would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adebowale Lawal, condemned the attack, describing it as tragic and reprehensible.

However, he commended the Safer Highway Patrol operatives for their bravery, vigilance, and swift response, which prevented further casualties. CP Lawal said the incident highlighted the effectiveness of ongoing policing reforms and enhanced operational strategies under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.

The commissioner expressed gratitude to the IGP for his strategic guidance and support in strengthening the nation’s security architecture. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to public safety, assuring residents that the police would remain resolute in tackling criminal gangs and bringing all perpetrators to justice.
