Okposo Esugo and the wife, Kate Otiti Esugo clinched four medals for Team Delta in shooting at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
Okposo won 1 gold medal in the Riffle Team event and 1 silver in the individual event while the wife Kate won 1 gold medal in the female 10m Air riffle Team event which they won in style by breaking the existing record and she also won another gold medal in the individual event with another female shooter also winning a silver in the individual event to help Delta dominate shooting medals table for now before other events go down.
Therefore, Team Delta now has a total of 3 gold and 2 silver for the now but there still other events coming up to see if they can increase their medals haul in shooting.
While speaking exclusively to The Pointer after their brilliant feat, Kate said “It’s exciting and victory feels good. Although, in sports you win some and lose some but the feeling whenever you win is inexplicable.
The Esugo’s who have been into shooting since the last twenty years explained that shooting is an elite sport which is very expensive, which is why most states shu from it.
They appealed to the government to pay a little more attention to the sport just like they are doing today football, athletics or basketball that the sport will go far in the county both locally and internationally.
They also revealed that shooting is a high medal event just like swimming in advising that shooting can bring more medals for both the state and the country if a little more attention to giving to the sport.
“We think government should focus more on plenty medal sport and encourage them rather than putting all their energy in sports that doesn’t have much medals”.
Many classic stories of brothers or sisters in sports have been told like Oliseh brothers, Sunday, Azubuike and Egutu, Nwankwo brothers, Kanu and Ogbonnaya, Segun and Wole Odegbami, Emmanuel and Patrick Okala, Davidson and Osmond Ezenwa, Serena and Venus Williams but that of a husband and wife is quite peculiar.
