Idowu, Esiti Added To Nigeria’s List Versus Ukraine

Lokomotiv Moscow of Russia defender, Bryan Idowu and Anderson Esiti from PAOK Saloniki of Greece have been added to the Super Eagles’ list to battle Ukraine in an international friendly on September 10.

Esiti gets the belated call-up in place of injured Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi, while Idowu is returning to the Eagles courtesy the absence of Benfica of Portugal’s long-term injury-plagued full back, Tyronne Ebuehi.

Russia-born Idowu, who scored on his Nigeria debut in a friendly against Argentina on November 14, 2017, is returning to the Eagles’ fold after being part of the squad’s 2018 World Cup misadventure in his country of birth, while Esiti is getting his second ever invitation.

With the addition of Idowu, twenty-four players are expected to fly to Ukraine for the international match which will hold at the Dnipro-Arena on September 10.

Idowu earned his last cap in a friendly against Uganda in November 2018 and missed out on the AFCON 2019 roster, while Esiti, who joined PAOK early this summer, first featured for the Eagles as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Zambia on October 9, 2016.

The 25-year-old Esiti, who has appeared in four official matches with PAOK, including three in Euro competitions, is a combative midfielder that was rated top in physicality by EA Sports in the FIFA 19 ratings.

They will now join 22 other players in Ukraine for the international match which will hold at the Dnipro-Arena on September 10, for which Nigeria will be without ever-reliable Ndidi, who suffered a hamstring injury in a Premier League match against Chelsea on August 18.

The development was disclosed Thursday is a statement on social media by the communications department of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which noted that both players are heading to the game due to the absences of the initially invited Ndidi and Ebuehi.

The NFF post read: “Coach Gernot Rohr has called up @PAOK_FC of Greece Midfielder Anderson Esiti as replacement for injured @Ndidi25.

“Bryan Idowu has also been added to the list to make it 24 players for Ukraine friendly. #UKRNGA #SoarSuperEagles #Team9jaStrong.”
