Ighalo In AFCON 2019 Top Goals Scorers’ Race

Shanghai Shenhua of China striker, Odion Jude Ighalo is level with Senegal’s Liverpool of England striker, Sadio Mane atop the goals scorers’ log at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, and just two short of the Nigerian record held by late ex-international. Rashidi Yekini.

In taking his current haul to three goals, with two well-taken efforts against Cameroon on Saturday, Ighalo took his tally to three, which is just two behind Nigeria’s single-championship record held by Yekini, who scored five to help the Eagles win AFCON ’94 in Tunisia.

Ighalo, who was the overall African top scorer during the qualifiers, scored Nigeria’s opening goal of AFCON 2019 versus Burundi and, despite struggling fruitlessly against Guinea and Madagascar, his brace on Saturday helped the Eagles seal a spot in the quarter finals, at the expense of the defending champions.

The former Watford of England striker’s brace of goals and an assist against Cameroon take him joint-top with Senegal’s Sadio Mane on the scorers’ chart at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Though Mane has lost two penalties in the championship, his lone strike on Friday helped The Teranga Lions beat Uganda 1-0, to give him three hits, along with Ighalo, and Cameroon’s Stéphane Bahoken.

All three are now ahead of Mickaël Poté of Benin Republic, Cédric Bakambu of DR Congo, Mohamed Salah and Ahmed El Mohamady, both of Egypt, as well as Jordan Ayew of Ghana, who were all on two goals each as at Saturday night.

Ighalo will now aim for another scoring spree against South Africa, who surprisingly defeated the host country, Egypt 1-0 on Saturday, with the China-based star also seeking more beyond the quarter-finals, in order to beat off Yekini as Nigeria’s all-time highest goals scorer in any AFCON competition ever.
