Norwayโs Jakob Ingebrigtsen is confident he will only get stronger heading into next yearโs world championships in Tokyo, noting that his training times are still on the rise.
The 23-year-old Norwegian burst onto the scene by winning the 1500m and 5000m double at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin as an 18-year-old. Since then, he has repeated that double twice at the continental level and also clinched victories in both events at the Tokyo Olympics.
At this summerโs Paris Games, Ingebrigtsen claimed gold in the 5000m but finished fourth in the 1500m. He also earned silver in the 1500m at the last two world championships while securing gold in the 5000m.
Despite these relative setbacks, Ingebrigtsen remains optimistic about his continued improvement.
Asked if he would be in better shape in a couple of yearsโ time, Ingebrigtsen was adamant: โDefinitely!
ย โEventually we thought it would stop improving, and that the threshold pace โ the pace that we can run for around an hourโฆ would kind of hit a roof, not improve.
ย โBut even if itโs just marginal, itโs still improving. You can always be stronger.โ
There was no rocket science behind the training process, Ingebrigtsen said ahead of Diamond League finals in Brussels.
ย โItโs just the same training, doing it simple, running a lot of mileage at the lower intensity, and doing it year after year,โ he said.
ย โObviously Iโm still improving. So of course, I believe I can improve and be a lot stronger next year and the year after that.
ย โAt the same time, itโs important to not have major setbacks because itโs crucial to have that stimulation week after week, month after month, year after year, for a longer period of time.
ย โThis year, I think I was able to recover from the winter (when he was recovering from an Achilles injury) because Iโve had so many years prior to that. But still itโs not a good thing.
ย โSo Iโm very much looking forward to racing tomorrow, but still getting back to my work for the next couple of months and the winter, to be a lot better prepared going into 2025.โ
Ingebrigtsen, who set a 2,000m world record at last yearโs Brussels meet, will face two American runners who recently managed to surpass him.
Cole Hocker won Olympic gold in Paris, while Yared Nuguse defeated Ingebrigtsen at last weekโs Diamond League meet in Zurich.
ย โI feel good and Iโm looking forward to fighting against a strong field tomorrow,โ said Ingebrigtsen.
Apart from the rarely-run 2,000m, Ingebrigtsen also holds world records in the indoor 1500m and last month smashed the 3,000m mark.
But the long-standing world best in the 1500m, the 3:26.00 run by Moroccoโs Hicham El Guerrouj back in 1998, has proved elusive, and not just for the Norwegian.

ย โThe world record has been standing for so long,โ he said. โItโs a really strong record. Itโs not impossible to beat it, but very difficult.
ย โIf thereโs something we know about world records itโs that theyโre not very easy. Of course, I would love to get as many shots at running as fast as I possibly can.
ย โBut still, itโs about being realistic.
ย โStatistically, itโs been impossible for many, many years. But thereโs always a possibility, but most likely not tomorrow.โ
Looking further ahead, Ingebrigtsen remained in bullish form.
ย โItโs possible to break every record,โ he opined. โThere are world records for a reason, because itโs the best performance by an athlete in history.
ย โBut weโve seen it, not only this year, but the last couple years, that all the different records are beatable.โ
Ingebrigtsen added: โYou canโt just wake up and jump in the race and break a world record. Everything needs to be aligned.
ย โAt my best, and if Iโm able to get a chance in many different events, I think I have a good shot of beating many of them, but it takes a lot of time and thereโs still a lot of work to be done to get there and have the opportunity in all the different ones.
ย โLuckily, Iโve been able to beat a couple, not too many attempts, so itโs a good start.โ
