After 11 years in the wilderness of the lower rung of the Nigerian league, Bendel Insurance of Benin City, finally returned to the top flight this season but with no win after four matches.
All that changed on Monday evening at the University of Benin Stadium, when the Benin Arsenal took league defending champions, Lobi Stars of Markurdi to the cleaners in a keenly contested tie. The fans were kept on the edge of their seats as both sides slugged it out to end the first 45 minutes goaless.
The home side continued to press on relentless in the second half and their efforts were to yield fruits when a simple tap in from skipper, Charles Omokaro sent the arena into a frenzy. This was in the 72 minute.
The away team tried to pull the chestnut out of fire for the remaining part of the game but the homers never allowed them. In fact they were lucky not to have conceded a second late into the match. This is Insurance’s first win since returning from the Nigeria National League after an 11 year sojourn and fans say they want more of such victories.
