Iwobi Receives Knocks For Snubbing Rennes’ Traore

Arsenal attacker, Alex Iwobi has come up for caustic words from soccer fans, stakeholders and journalists, following his rude reaction to Stade Rennes star, Hamari Traore during Thursday’s UEFA Europa League tie.

While Iwobi escaped scolding for his form this time out, the Super Eagles’ star got on the wrong side of fans’ reactions, as he appeared to cover his nose while speaking to Traore during a 3-0 victory in the Europa League last 16.

It happened when the 22-year-old Iwobi brushed with Traore late in the encounter at Emirates Stadium and the Eagles star seemed to suggest that the Malian right-back had a smelly mouth.

Iwobi appeared to  cover his nose in order to avoid what he deemed bad odor from Traore’s mouth, while also posting a frown of disgust and then stepped back when the opposing player tried to speak with him.

The Arsenal star’s reaction, though, has led to heated comments hurled at him on social media, as fans and journalists alike are unanimous in the verdict that Iwobi’s action was uncouth and demeaning.

BBC Sport’s Nigerian writer, Shina Okeleji would not be left out of the backlash, as the often amiable and calm journalist reeled out strong words to scold Iwobi, who he labelled disrespectful and unprofessional.

Okeleji wrote: “Alex Iwobi was rude, disrespectful, unprofessional and filthy. Forget the banter & silly excuses you want to suggest.

“Race and colour irrelevant…embarrassingly unacceptable.#Mali’s Hamari Traore is one of the coolest, respectful responsible players in Ligue 1.”
