Iwobi’s Europa League Final Goal Excites Lineker

Arsenal of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi has won superlative words from England legend, Gary Lineker, who admits he was amazed by the sheer power and accuracy behind the Super Eagles’ star’s goal in the UEFA Euroopa League final.

Iwobi set some records with his goal, as he became the first Nigerian to score in the final of a European club competition, and the first substitute to score in a Europa League final since Jônatas for Espanyol in 2007.

Although Iwobi’s goal could not save Arsenal from falling woefully 4-1 against London rivals during the final in Baku, Azerbaijan, Lineker was marveled by the lad’s effort and held nothing back in his awed response.

Although Lineker took swipes at Arsenal for failing to make the final competitive, the ex-striker heaped praises on Iwobi for his efforts and wonder goal, despite only playing as a substitute on Wednesday night.

Observers would agree with Lineker that Iwobi was one of few sparks in The Gunners’ squad, as they missed another chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League with the loss in Baku.

Critics went to town with questions about the decision by Arsenal coach, Unai Emery to start Iwobi on the bench, especially as German playmaker, Mesut Ozil again struggled for form during the game.

Iwobi made a case for himself with a right-footed rocket from outside the area, after Chelsea failed to clear their lines in the 69th minute, and Lineker could not do but take to social media to eulogise the Eagles’ star.

Lineker said: ”That is one hell of a goal from Iwobi. We’ve seen some bonkers games in Europe this season. Not again, surely.”
