Josh Maja Holds Personal Talks With Rohr

Girondins-Bordeaux of France attacker, Josh Maja is set to gain from the rare privilege of holding personal talks with Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr, as their tete-a-tete in the European country could open doors for the ex-Sunderland of England top scorer to finally don Nigeria’s colours.

Maja has been on the radar of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for over two years, with several hints of his national team call-up failing to become a reality, but all that might take a turnaround for the better in the coming weeks, following his one-on-one discussions with Rohr.

Incidentally, Samuel Kalu’s teammate had been invited to train with the Eagles ahead of a friendly against Burkina Faso in March 2017 but, even before the game was later cancelled, club commitments prevented him from meeting up, though he visited the camp at Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Born in London, the 20-year-old Maja has a British passport but he is not cap-tied by any competitive appearance for England, meaning he is free to play for Nigeria without making a change of nationality request to FIFA.

Rohr has now strongly hinted that Maja might be handed a late call-up to the Eagles for their upcoming international friendly against Ukraine, as the Franco-German gaffer confirmed that he learnt a lot more about the player during their time together in Bordeaux.

The Eagles’ gaffer is enchanted by the fact that Maja has been involved in all matches played by Bordeaux so far in Ligue 1 this season, and was on target against Montpellier on match day two, which Rohr says show that the highly-promising attacker has a lot of good quality to offer.

The former Gabon, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso handler added that he was impressed by the camaraderie he saw between Maja and Kalu, which he believes is a sign of better relations ahead of both players and a fact that the new lad on his radar would settle down fast in the Eagles.

Rohr told Le Point Gold: ”I ate with Samuel Kalu and Josh Maja, since we have a second Nigerian in Bordeaux, he is eligible for Nigeria.

”We talked together. For Maja, it would be easier to have him, I have a lot of attackers but it’s not impossible that I select him. I already started talking with him about the selection.

“He’s pretty positive because he has not played U20s with England. He can play the friendly matches, only because he did not play for England U20s, which is the case for many others that we have on our radar.

”We are going to play a game in Ukraine and I was told it was too late to get a visa for players who do not have a European passport, but he has because he is also English, so he could eventually join us.”
