A major fire outbreak occurred early Sunday at the Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State, spreading swiftly from an industrial facility to nearby residential areas.

Videos shared on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke rising into the sky as fierce flames razed sections of the factory complex.

Emergency responders were mobilised to the scene amid frantic evacuations by residents, who fled as the fire advanced towards homes in the vicinity.

As at press time, authorities had yet to determine the cause of the fire, and no casualties or injuries had been officially reported.

However, residents told Vanguard that the inferno started around dawn and was suspected to have been triggered by a gas explosion at a foam manufacturing company within the industrial park.

The fire reportedly escalated rapidly, destroying parts of the factory and damaging several nearby houses before firefighters were able to contain its spread.

Confirming the incident, Director of the Ogun State Fire Service, Fatai Adefala, told PUNCH Online that firefighting teams from Agbara and Ota had been deployed to the area. “Our men from Agbara and Ota have been on the ground doing the needful for over three hours,” he said.
