Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the highest goalscorer in World Cup history after netting twice in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria.

The defending champions secured the win after a closely contested encounter, with Messi finding the back of the net in each half to guide his side to another important victory.

Widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, Messi surpassed the previous record of 16 World Cup goals held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose.

Argentina now have two wins from two matches and have booked their place in the next round as they continue their quest to retain the World Cup title.

Meanwhile Austria will look to secure qualification for the next round when they face Algeria in their final group game.
