Mikel Banks On Youthfulness, Fitness For Glory

Super Eagles’ captain, John Mikel Obi has suggested that there are two basic assets that will help Nigeria at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he says the three-time champions will bank on abilities of their youthful squad and the team’s high level of fitness.

Although he admits Nigeria are not favourites to win the trophy, after the final in July, Mikel says the Eagles will play without any pressure against them, which means they would be able to stay calm and cool.

With such factors appearing to boost the Nigerian squad heading into AFCON 20167, the former Chelsea of England star, who played in the English Championship with a short-term contract at Middlesbough this season, enthused that the Eagles would surprise some other nations.

He added that he is delighted to see all players on the same wavelength, showing deep levels of zeal and equally committed to the joint-task of taking Nigeria back to the podium spot.

Mikel stated: ”I am happy that every player in this team want to do it, we want to achieve the same thing.

“We want to be in the finals and win the tournament but we also need to know we are not the outright favorite.

“We have to remain cool, calm, just do what we have to do, not look at other teams.

”If we do that, we’ll keep winning games. Experience also plays a big part, sometimes youthfulness also plays a big part.

”We have  got a very good mixture in this team that’s going to help us. We have a very young team, they are all fit.”
