More foreign-born players eager to play for Super Falcons – Waldrum

Date:

Super Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum, says more players with Nigerian roots in the United States of America and England have shown interest in playing for the Super Falcons.

A number of players in the current Super Falcons squad, who were born in the USA to Nigerian parents, made their debut for the team under Waldrum.

The 66-year-old tactician first selected midfielder Toni Payne and her younger sister Nicole Payne.

The rest are Michelle Alozie, Esther Okoronkwo, Ifeoma Onumonu, Yewande Balogun and Jennifer Echegini.

The nine-time African champions have made a huge impact at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Super Falcons were unbeaten in the group stage and will face England in the Round of 16 next Monday.

Waldrum claimed that there is more interest in the team from eligible players.

“I’ve had some U-17 coaches reach out about players they have, a couple of really good U-20 players that are playing in the US that now want to be connected to Nigeria,” he told AFP.

“We also have those connections in England. There are a few players there that I’m already looking at to bring to the Olympics and so forth. I think it’s a huge plus.”
