MTN closes offices nationwide amid outrage over SIM blocking

Telecoms giant MTN has closed all its stores and service centers across Nigeria following a backlash from subscribers.

The unrest began after the network provider suspended service for many customers on Sunday due to discrepancies between their National Identification Numbers and SIM registrations.

A viral video posted on social media Monday showed a mob attacking a barricade outside an MTN office.

The footage depicted a large crowd of frustrated subscribers vandalizing the company’s office in FESTAC Town, Lagos State.

In response to the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin announced on X.com that the DPO of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order and peace at the scene, emphasizing that such actions were unacceptable.

On Tuesday, MTN announced that all its shops across the country would be closed for the day. “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” the company stated on X.
