President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, has lauded the South-East representative of the federation, Ugo Udezue, for spearheading a regional basketball development initiative that includes the organization of a South-East Basketball Tournament and the construction of the Hon. Richard Idike Basketball Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
Kida described the initiative as a shining example of how private individuals and stakeholders can complement government efforts in advancing sports development, particularly at the grassroots level.
The three-day South-East Basketball Tournament is scheduled to hold from June 5 to June 7 at the Ebonyi Shopping Mall and will feature teams from Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Anambra and Abia States. The championship will also serve as the platform for the official commissioning of the newly constructed basketball facility.
Speaking ahead of the event, the NBBF President emphasized that sustainable sports development in Nigeria requires active participation from the private sector, noting that government alone cannot provide all the infrastructure and opportunities needed to nurture the country’s vast sporting talents.
“This is a commendable initiative that aligns perfectly with the vision of the Nigeria Basketball Federation to deepen grassroots basketball development across the country. The construction of a standard basketball facility and the organization of a regional tournament demonstrate what can be achieved when stakeholders take ownership of sports development,” Kida said.
He stressed the need for corporate organizations, philanthropists and sports enthusiasts to collaborate with sports federations and state governments in building sporting infrastructure and supporting competitions capable of discovering and developing young athletes.
“Government cannot do it alone. We need more private sector participation and corporate partnerships to unlock the enormous potential that exists among our youths. Initiatives such as this provide platforms for talent discovery, youth engagement and community development,” he added.
Kida further disclosed that the NBBF would work closely with the National Institute for Sports (NIS) to ensure that outstanding players identified during the tournament are given structured opportunities for growth and development.
According to him, the partnership will establish a clear pathway for talented young basketball players to receive professional training, mentorship and exposure, with the ultimate goal of producing elite athletes capable of representing Nigeria at major international competitions.
“The NBBF is excited about the opportunities this tournament presents. Through our partnership with the National Institute for Sports, talented players discovered during the competition will be given the opportunity to be trained and nurtured. Our goal is to develop them into future national team players and potential podium champions who will bring glory to Nigeria at international competitions,” Kida stated.
The NBBF President expressed confidence that the South-East Basketball Tournament would significantly boost basketball development in the region while serving as a blueprint for similar initiatives across the country.
Beyond the competition, the event is expected to attract coaches, scouts, administrators and basketball stakeholders from across the South-East and beyond, creating a platform for discussions on sports infrastructure expansion, talent identification and sustainable grassroots development.
The tournament and the commissioning of the Hon. Richard Idike Basketball Court are widely regarded as important milestones in the ongoing efforts to strengthen basketball development in the South-East and expand opportunities for young athletes to pursue careers in the sport.
