The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has set their eyes on having a more robust Premier League for both male and female in 2025.
While speaking during a press briefing with journalists immediately after their board meeting held at the Pan Ocean Corporation, FF Millennium Towers, 13/14 Ligali Ayorinde Avenue, Victoria Island, Lagos, NBBF President, Musa Kida hinted that the board just finished their last meeting for the year 2024, where they looked at their activities for 2024 and validated also the programs they hope to undertake in 2025.
The eloquent Kida noted that for them the Paris Olympics was their peak moment, where D’Tigress, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team became the first African team to win a game at the Olympics and even went all the way to reach the quarter finals.
He also said it was where Nigeria’s coach, Rena Wakama was fully recognized by the world of basketball as she emerged as the best women’s coach at the Olympics and Ezinne the go to player, was also on the team of the first 10 best basket ball players at the games.
Kida stated that their focus for next year will be the Afrobasket for women where they will be looking to tie in a four pit consecutive quadruple at the competition.
According to him, this will be a good record to have, knowing fully well that D’Tigress has not lost a game at the continental level since the last six to seven years.
Kida also revealed that the leagues will be better organized in 2025, which will have more matches played on a home and away basis, it will be longer for more visibility rather the way they have been struggling due to not having sponsors, such that sometimes it’s abridged other times it’s patterned in line with the agreement with the team owners.
“We have just held our NBBF board meeting where we looked at our activities for 2024 and also validated our programs for 2025.
“The outgoing year has been great with our peak moment being the impressive run of our women’s basketball team, D’Tigress at the 2024 Paris Olympic games.
“Our focus for 2025 will be Afrobasket for women while also ensuring we have a more robust premier leagues in the coming year”, he concluded.
