Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe urged his side to build on Saturday’s 4–1 victory at Everton, their first Premier League away win this season.

Defender Malick Thiaw opened the scoring after just 52 seconds — the fastest goal in the league this term — before Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade extended the lead to secure a commanding half-time advantage. Thiaw added his second in the second half, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s effort for Everton offered little consolation.

At full-time, Howe and his players celebrated with the travelling Newcastle fans, relishing their first top-flight away triumph since April.

“That was really important as we haven’t had that feeling enough or at all,” Howe said. “I’m pleased we were able to put that right and give the players that winning feeling to take back to Newcastle. It’s a big moment for us, a step forward.”

When asked if a mental hurdle had been cleared, Howe added: “Time will tell. I’m not going to make any big statements. There’s a long way to go.”

Everton manager David Moyes refused to blame the absence of midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who was sent off against Manchester United on Monday, for the team’s heavy defeat.

“It could be that, but it could have been the quality of Newcastle United,” Moyes said. “They got off to a great start, we got off to a terrible start. They were better, more experienced, and played better than us.”
