Niger Delta Games Edo 2026: Cross River State Concludes Statewide Sports Talent Hunt Across 18 LGAs

The Cross River State Sports Commission, in collaboration with the Cross River State Liaison Committee, has successfully concluded a statewide sports talent hunt across all 18 local government areas in preparation for the 2026 Niger Delta Games in Edo State.

The exercise spanned the full geographical breadth of the state, from the hills of Obudu in the north to the coastal swamps of Bakassi in the south, targeting grassroots and rural communities to discover raw and exceptional sporting talents.

The talent hunt began in the Northern Senatorial District, with experts deployed to Ogoja, Obudu, and Obanliku, later extending to Yala and Bekwarra. Young athletes turned out in large numbers, showcasing their skills and enthusiasm for competition.

In the Central Senatorial District, the exercise was conducted in Ikom, Ugep, and Obubra, drawing participants from all local governments. The well-coordinated process identified a strong pool of emerging talents, reflecting the region’s potential.

The Southern Senatorial District saw the scouting team visit Akpabuyo, Odukpani, Bakassi, Calabar South, and Calabar Municipal councils. Participation was robust, and the exercise highlighted the effectiveness of taking talent identification directly to rural communities.

At the conclusion of the tour, Chairman of the Liaison Committee and the Sports Commission, Mr. Etta Lawrence, praised the professionalism and dedication of the committee and technical experts. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with his vision of strengthening grassroots sports development and ensuring Cross River State fields a competitive team at the Niger Delta Games.

Mr. Lawrence also acknowledged the support of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Dunamis Icon, noting that the program has brought joy and renewed hope to young people across rural communities.

The Secretary of the Liaison Committee, Hon. Queen Gladys Igut, described the exercise as impactful, while the Director of Sports Development, Mrs. Rosemary Usang, expressed delight in the opportunity provided to young athletes. The Head of Media and Publicity, Ettah Emmanuel O., praised the decision to extend the talent hunt to rural areas, noting the excitement and joy on the faces of the young participants. Committee member David Enwa also commended the overwhelming response and enthusiasm of the athletes.

Selected athletes will now converge for a final screening, after which the best performers will represent Cross River State at the 2026 Niger Delta Games in Edo State.
