Yusuf Ali, the newly inaugurated CEO of Elites Athletes and Podium Board, has emphasized the need for Nigeria to revamp its approach to sports development.

The former vice president of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria in a recent interview with journalists highlighted key strategies to restore Nigeria’s podium finishing glory.

He stressed the importance of developing a strong college league system, similar to the United States.

“In 1964, we won our first medal, but then we declined. We need to tap into the youthful energy of 16-25 year olds in our tertiary institutions.

“Last year, 184 athletes left for the US, where they have a robust college system that produces podium finishers,’ He stated.

Ali advocated for a proactive approach to preparation, rather than relying on last-minute efforts. “We can’t wait until the competition is next month to start preparing.

“We must prepare ahead, and with the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko and Olubukola Olopade, we have a template in place to achieve our dreams.”

The former Edo State Sports Commission chairman emphasized the need to focus on sports that can guarantee podium finishing.

“We will only invest in sports that can deliver medals. We must have a system that produces Elite athletes with podium finishing potential. If you’re not sure of a medal, we won’t pick you.”

With a clear plan in place, Ali is hopeful that Nigeria will return to its podium finishing glory in the near future.
