The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the World Athletics African Running Conference, Chief Solomon Ogba, has declared that Nigeria is on the verge of becoming the continent’s leading destination for road races.
Speaking ahead of the African Running Conference, scheduled for Lagos from February 12 to 13, Ogba said the country is steadily reclaiming its status as a sporting powerhouse, driven by the rising success and international recognition of road races across Nigeria.
“The progress we are making in road races is visible globally, and that is why I am particularly excited about the upcoming conference in Lagos,” Ogba said.

He noted that the conference will bring together leading experts and key stakeholders from across the globe, providing a platform for strategic engagement and collaboration.
“It will convene the best minds in road running—from the world governing body to African authorities and major industry players—all working to shape the fast-growing road-running landscape in Nigeria and across Africa,” he added.
As anticipation builds across the continent, Lagos is poised to once again become a focal point for global athletics. The conference will be followed by the 11th edition of the Platinum Label Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on February 14, 2026, an event that has grown in prestige to become one of Africa’s largest and most prominent road races.
The African Running Conference aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of road races in Africa while supporting the organic growth of world-class marathon events across the continent.
