Nigeria vs Guinea-Bissau: Iwobi makes two promises after AFCON qualifier defeat

Date:

Super Eagles star, Alex Iwobi, has promised Nigerians that the team will next time do their best and make the country proud following their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, 1-0 shock defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Friday.

Iwobi spoke to the media after Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria at the Abuja National Stadium.

Mama Balde’s first-half goal gave Guinea-Bissau the victory over Nigeria.

Jose Peseiro’s men have now dropped to second position in Group A following the defeat against Guinea-Bissau.

“First and foremost, as players and staff, we know we’ve got to react to this result,” Iwobi told the media after the game.

“All we can do is to improve, and to all the fans, all I can say is that they should stick by us and support us because we give 100% not just for ourselves but also for our nation.

“Next time, we’re going to do our best and make the country proud.

“We know we’re privileged to wear the shirt, there are a lot of people who want to be in this position.”

The Everton player added: “I don’t think we played under pressure. Like the coach [Peseiro] said, they scored with the only chance they created in the game.”

Nigeria will now face Guinea-Bissau in the return leg on Monday.
