NiMet Forecasts Heavy Rainfall for 12 States This Week

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting heavy rainfall across 12 states this week. According to the bulletin, which covers the period from September 10 to September 16, the affected states include Bauchi, Niger, Bayelsa, Kaduna, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Taraba, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Rivers, and Delta.

The forecast notes that while the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is expected to remain weak over West Africa, increased moisture influx and velocity potential will likely contribute to heavy rainfall in these regions.

In addition to the heavy rainfall in the listed states, moderate to heavy rain is anticipated in parts of Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Kwara, Benue, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Ado-Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos states. Moderate rainfall is also expected in parts of Enugu and Kebbi.

The forecast predicts low to moderate rainfall for parts of Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, and Sokoto, while other areas of the country are expected to experience low rainfall.

NiMet has issued a warning about the potential for flash floods, particularly on roads, bridges, and low-lying areas, which could disrupt vehicular traffic. The agency advises the public to take safety precautions and avoid walking through fast-flowing runoff waters, paths, and river channels.
