Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali earned his fourth clean sheet of the season, playing a key role in Chippa United’s hard-fought 2-0 victory over Cape Town City at the Cape Town City Stadium in a Betway Premiership clash.
Nwabali was crucial in keeping the hosts at bay, making six vital saves throughout the match. His impressive performances helped his side seize control in the latter stages, despite a few early nervy moments. In the third minute, Prins Tjiueza almost caught him off guard with an audacious lob from distance, which narrowly grazed the crossbar.
Just minutes later, Nwabali was called into action again when Tshegofatso Nyama launched a long-range shot from his own half. The Nigerian goalkeeper reacted brilliantly, making a one-handed save to preserve the scoreline.
Chippa United broke the deadlock in the second half through Sinoxolo Kwayiba, who found the net in the 61st minute. Kwayiba then doubled his tally just nine minutes later, securing a brace and a commanding lead in the Cape Town derby.
Despite Cape Town City’s efforts to find a way back, Chippa’s defense, led by Nwabali, held firm to ensure the victory. The win saw Chippa United leapfrog Cape Town City into ninth place, moving into the top half of the league table.
Nwabali, who continues to hold the No. 1 spot for Nigeria, will now turn his focus to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March, where the Super Eagles will face Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The former Enyimba and Go Round FC goalkeeper remains a key figure, though Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle faces tough decisions in the goalkeeping department due to Maduka Okoye’s injury and Francis Uzoho’s limited club appearances.
