Defending champion Goodness Nwachukwu delivered a record-breaking performance on Wednesday, shattering the women’s discus throw F42-44/F61-64 world record with a throw of 39.66 metres to win Nigeria’s seventh gold medal at the Commonwealth Games at Scotstoun Stadium.
Her record-setting effort, which prompted a “NEW WR” display on the stadium scoreboard, earned 1,130 points under the para-athletics scoring system. Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye claimed the silver medal with a throw of 38.52m, scoring 931 points, while compatriot Bree Cronin secured bronze with 36.00m for 861 points.
Nigeria’s Destiny Agbo also impressed, throwing a personal-best 33.79m to finish fifth with 787 points.

The gold extends Nwachukwu’s dominance of the event since she first won Commonwealth gold and broke the world record at Birmingham 2022, and marks her second consecutive world record at the Games.
Meanwhile, in a separate final, 19-year-old shot putter Jessica Oji claimed silver for Nigeria with a throw of 17.87 metres — her first Commonwealth Games appearance since switching allegiance from the United States earlier this year.
Canada’s Sarah Mitton took gold with 19.88m. Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron matched Oji’s 17.87m but was placed third on count-back, handing the Nigerian debutant the silver medal.
Oji, a University of Pennsylvania athlete and Nigerian shot put record holder, becomes one of the standout young faces of Nigeria’s field-events programme following the result.
Nigeria’s gold and silver medals on the day lifted the country’s tally to seven gold, five silver and two bronze for 14 medals overall at the Games, with further events still to be decided.
