Obagol son makes victorious debut against Brescia

Kevin Martins, the son of former Nigeria international striker Obafemi Martins, has made a winning start to his senior professional career with Monza.

The 19-year-old played a key role in Monza’s victory over Brescia in a Coppa Italia match, featuring in the starting lineup under Coach Alessandro in front of the home crowd at the U-Power Stadium.

It’s an exciting beginning for Kevin, following in his father’s footsteps.

Monza  took the lead as early as the fifth minute through Greek Georgios  Kriakopoulous  while  Matteo Pessina added the second goal six minutes later even  as 31-year-old Gianluca Caprari  added the third goal from the spot in the 40th minute to  end the first half  with a 3-0 cushion.

The visitor  scored  their consolatory goal deep into the second half through Patrick Amoako Nuamah  in the 68th minute.

According to  Football Italia, the right-sided winger was born in Milan in January 2005, when his father,  Oba (Obagol in Nigeria)  while playing for Inter.

Kevin spent time in the youth academies of both Milan and Inter, moving to Monza in January 2023.

He has joint Italian and Nigerian citizenship, choosing to represent Italy at Under-15 level.

Obafemi Martins was just a teenager when he rose to prominence at Inter Milan from 2002 to 2006.

During his career, he also represented clubs like Newcastle United, Wolfsburg, Birmingham City, Levante, and Seattle before retiring in January 2021.

Known as “Obagol,” he will celebrate his 40th birthday on October 28.    

At Inter, he won the Scudetto, Supercoppa Italiana, and two Coppa Italia titles.

Martins had a significant international career with the Super Eagles, scoring 18 goals in 42 appearances between 2004 and 2015.

 His impact on Nigerian football and his club achievements continue to be celebrated.
