Ochebo Celebrates Handball Teams’ African Games’ Tickets

Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) president, Samuel Ochebo is still relishing the country’s qualification for both male and female categories at this year’s Africa Games, as he says the feats are worth celebrating for several days o come.

Ochebo was full of excitement, following the qualification of Nigeria’s men and women handball teams for the 2019 Games in Morocco.

Nigeria women defeated Burkina Faso 33-26, while the men outclassed Benin Republic 35-29; with the country’s under-18 players, Toyin Yusuf and Hope Sunday of Plateau Peacocks as well as Kwara’s Muhinat Yusuf made history in the starting seven and excelling throughout the game.

Ocheho enthused that the young players justified the HFN decision to include youth in the senior teams, as they boosted both qualifications.

While declaring that most of the male players will be at this month’s 3rd IHF Emerging Nations Championship in Georgia, Ocheho also hailed the crew led by Coach Rafiu Salami for transforming the team in short time.

Ochebo added: “The coaches performed well, they selected, trained and groomed the boys well, despite being in camp for about eleven day.

“We are in a celebratory mood right now; I am glad we were able to pick both tickets after a hard fought battle.

“Nigeria went with a young team and they showed guts. The board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria is happy.

“We are glad to be vindicated by our decision to come with a younger team, now the battle has just started.

“Most members of this team will be going to Georgia in June for the 3rd IHf emerging Nation Tournament.

“It will serve as a good ground for the team to prepare for the 2019 All African Games. We will do our best to make Nigeria proud in Morocco.

“Congratulations to both the men and women handball teams. I, board members and all stakeholders appreciate your never die attitude.”
