Ochebo: Private, Puiblic Contradictions Affect Handball

Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) president, Samuel Ochebo has confessed that one issue he is battling to contend with is complexities arising from mixing private sponsorship and corporate support for the sport, which he once participated in as a player.

Ochebo stressed that he is always eager to add new ideas and put innovations into developing Nigerian handball but confessed that the issue of funding and sponsorship always stands as a clog in the wheel.

He added that lack of support from corporate bodies has been a huge challenge for the HFN, but Ochebo also admitted that his presence in the country’s banking sector has been a great advantage for him.

However, despite being a banker and former handball player, who really knows where the shoes pinches, Ochebo confessed that it has been very difficult overcoming various challenges in running the sport in Nigeria.

Ochebo added: “I am faced with a lot of frustration when you bring in a private sector mentality to a place filled with public sector mentality.

“There could be that challenge but you just have to learn to navigate both waters and see how you can manage the people.

“I think that’s what leadership is all about. But, in terms of bringing sponsors, it’s a great factor that has contributed.

“Being in the private sector has helped. I can always continue to leverage on that to see how we can get more sponsors.”
