Ogunbote Shifts Base From Enugu To Makurdi

Nigerian veteran football coach, Gbenga Ogunbote has shifted his base from Enugu to Makurdi, as the highly successful soccer tactician has taken a bold decision to leave Rangers International, in order to take over the mantle of the technical crew at Lobi Stars.

The Middle Belt club, who were winners of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) the previous season, but toiled in the Super-6 of the past campaign, have already confirmed that Ogunbote as their head coach, ahead of the 2019-20 season.

The 54-year-old former coach of Gateway United of Abeokuta, Sunshine Stars of Akure, Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Enyimba of Aba has signed a year’s deal with the Markudi-based club.

Ogunbote guided Rangers to a third-place finish at the NPFL play-offs at Agege Stadium, which saw The Flying Antelopes clinch a Confederations Cup spot, but he opted to leave The Coal City after talks over a contract extension failed with the Enugu State-owned side.

He has now taken over from Evans Ogenyi, who acted on an interim basis following the death of Lobi Stars’ coach, Solomon Ogbeide, but the club could only finish fifth in the Super-6 and missed out on a desired return to the continental terrain ext term.

In two years with Rangers, Ogunbote, who earlier took Sunshine Stars to back-to-back semi-final spots in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup, returned to silverware after two decades.

That came when he guided The Flying Antelopes to the Federation Cup title, after an absence of 35 years, following a 4-2 victory over Kano Pillars on penalties, in a final that saw his side storm back from three goals down to end the tie in Asaba, Delta State 3-3 at regulation time.
