Okoye Takes After Ordega At Atletico Madrid

Memory will come alive about the exploits of Super Falcons’ winger, Francisca Ordega in the colours of the female team of Atlético Madrid of Spain, as the squad have hooked Nigerian-born striker, Mabel Okoye.

While Ordega playedon loan at Atletico from Washington Spirit of USA and has since moved on to China, her days in Spain will surely serve as motivation for 18-year-old Okoye, who has signed for the Madrid-based La Liga Femeni outfit from lower division side, CD Tacon.

However, unlike Ordge,a who went straight into Atletico’s main team, Okoye will start with the Madrid club’s Femenino B and will be hoping to break into the first team as the season progresses.

A product of Madrid CFF and member of the Spanish side that won the UEFA Women’s Under-17 Euro 2018, Okoye made her debut in the Spanish top flight, Primera División Femenina in 2017, when she was 16.

A year later, in December 2018, the highly-rated teenager wrote her name in the history books after becoming the first player of Nigerian descent to win the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup with Spain.

Born Maria Isabel Okoye Robles on July 30, 2001, she was named in Spain’s side to the 2018 UEFA Women’s U-17 Championship in Lithuania, which was the UEFA qualifiers for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

That came after she netted three goals for the Spanish side against Montenegro and Israel in the qualifiers for the U17 Euros, after making four appearances for the first team of Madrid CFF in the Primera División Femenina and was included in the match day squad seven times.

Okoye was on target as Spain demolished Israel 7-0 in a UEFA U17 Euro Elite Round match at National Team Complex, after making hay with a sumptuous volley to make it 5-0 in the 50th minute.

She features for Spain’s youth team, Andrea Okene, who is on the books of Levante UD in the Spanish Second Division and has been capped by Spain at U16 level, but Okoye is the lass most prominent at the monent.

As she sets about another chapter in her young but vibrant career, Okoye has been training with Atlético de Madrid Femenino B under the guidance of their manager, Blas Ramírez since August 1 and could make her competitive debut against CF Pozuelo de Alarcón on September 8.
