Galatasaray of Turkey striker, Henry Onyekuru has gained praise from his colleagues and officials of the Super Eagles, following his traditional wedding in Benin City with his long time girlfriend, Esty, with a message from the Nigerian national team hailing him for making the right choice.
The 22-year-old Onyekuru, who is on loan at Galatasaray from Everton of England, had been dating Esty for several years, and they already have a one-year-old son together, but the Onitsha-born winger-cum-attacker finally solemnized their relationship on Saturday in the Edo State capital.
Present at the occasion were some of his Eagles’ colleagues, led by John Ugochukwu Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo, Kenneth Omeruo, Jamilu Collins, Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi, Paul Onuachu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, as well as the team’s assistant coach, Imama Amapakabo.
They all rallied round with sweet words for Onyekuru, who played just one game as the Eagles went on to win their eighth bronze medal at the recent Africa Cup of Nations, with the lad, who got his breakthrough in Surulere area of Lagos, catching eyes with his style of lying flat on the pitch in trying to block Royard Mareh’s free kick during the semi-finals.
Nigeria went on to lose that match 2-1, with Mahrez’s added time sizzler making a world of difference for Algeria, who eventually went on to win the cup by beating Senegal 1-0 in the final, but Onyekuru and his friends showed on Saturday that they have put that setback behind them.
Instead, it was all joy, as Onyekuru, who moved into his new mansion in Lekki area of Lagos last month, to for wife the mother of his son in Benin City to crown an eventful season, during which he won the Turkish Super Lig title and Cup double with Gala as well as bronze at Egypt 2019.
The fleet-footed lad, who shot to limelight by emerging top scorer in the Belgian league with KAS Eupen, from which he joined Everton in 2017, but has spent two seasons on loan deals at RSC Anderlecht of Belgium and Galatasaray, will now hope for his career inspiration from his wife.
He is yet to find a way of playing at Everton, due to work permit issues, and his future at Goodison Park remains in doubt but, rather than spend another season on loan, he is thinking of making a permanent transfer to another top club this summer, preferably in Italy or Spain.
However, not thing in that regard was on his mind at the weekend, as he tied the nuptial knots the traditional way, and the Eagles’ media unit hit social media to hail him for ‘opening eyes’ to see the right lady to wed.
