Onyekuru: I’m In Turkey To Win Many Trophies

Galatasaray of Turkey striker, Henry Onyekuru has raised the ante ahead of his side’s crunch Turkish Super Lig fixture against local rivals, Istanbul Basaksehir, ahead of which he says he is aiming for more trophies.

Onyeekuru was speaking against the backdrop of his side’s conquest of the Turkish FA Cup, following a 3-1 win against Akhisar Belediyespor, but he is eyeing victory in Sunday’s massive title clash, as he believes the defending champions can win the Lig title as well.

It means Galatasaray must make the best of home advantage to beat their visitors from across the city, ahead of which both teams are on 66 points, but Onyekuru’s side lie top of the table on goals difference.

Two games are left to play in the season, and Onyekuru is banking on a repeat of the Turkish Cup heroics, in which Algeria’s Sofiane Feghouli and Senegal’s Mbaye Diagne both scored late goals for Galatasaray.

Onyekuru played the entire duration of the game, but fired blanks in the encounter, as The Lions came from a goal down beat already-relegated Akhisarspor at Yeni Sivas 4 Eylul Stadium, in which Sinan Gumus also got a goal for Fatih Terim’s side.

The former KAS Eupen and RSC Anderlecht of Belgium winger-cum-attacker will now aim for history with Gala, as he eyes the double by capping off a fine run with the Lig title, at the expense of Basaksehir.

Speaking ahead of their league clash on Sunday at Türk Telekom Arena, Onyekuru, who has 15 goals in 29 league games, believes Gala’s record 18th Cup success has put them on course for a domestic double.

Onyekuru, who also has six assists to his name, told BBC Sport: “The big one is against our title rivals Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.

“Hopefully we will be champions again. I came to Turkey to win trophies and I give God all the glory that the first one is in the bag.

“I feel so happy and blessed being my first season in the Turkish league, first trophy in a Cup final is amazing.”
