Orji Okonkwo Dusts Wayne Rooney With Best Goal

Montreal Impact of Canada youngster, Orji Okonkwo has set America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) alight, following his stunning goal that beat off an effort by former Manchester United star, Wayne Rooney in the race for best of the week in God’s Own Country.

Against all expectations, the product of Football Colleague stole through the spotlight to dust Rooney, as his sizzler for Montreal Impact beat off all opposition in the roll call for goal of the week for MatchDay 17 of the ongoing season.

The Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup gold medalist, who also scored the competition’s best goal with a scorcher from distance, is now hogging all headlines in Uncle Sam’s Country, as the 21-year-old Okonkwo beat off Rooney to win the latest award.

The Benin City-born Okonkwo was the hero for Montreal Impact, as the Canada-based side got a 2-1 victory against Portland Timbers on Wednesday, June 26, with the former Boogna of Italy rising star scoring twice in the encounter.

His second goal in that encounter has now earned him the best on target gong, with a citation noting that Okonkwo scored the winner in the 66th minutes, despite just returning from a three-game absence caused by injury.

In noting how special Okonkwo’s goal was, the panel of judges pointed out that he struck the ball on the fly and it ended up in the top right corner of The Timbers’ net, on the same evening when Rooney scored the only goal against Orlando City from his own half of the field.

Rooney’s effort initially appeared as a sure bet for the best goal award, but he lost it to Okonkwo, who now has four goals for Montreal Impact this season.

Okonkwo, who is still on loan from Bologna, missed the last three games for Montreal due to a leg injury he suffered against Los Angeles on May 25th, but he returned with a double bang to help Impact remain second in the Eastern Conference with 30 points, two behind Philadelphia Union.
