Oshoala Downplays Equal Pay For Falcons, Eagles

Barcelona Femeni of Spain attacker, Asisat Oshoala has downplayed talk about players in Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons agitating for equal pay with their male colleagues in the Super Eagles, as she says it is not a priority for the squad.

Rather than buttress a view expressed early this week by Falcons’ captain to the last FIFA Women’s World Cup, Desire Oparanozie, Oshoala opined that they should first talk about improving the quality and standard of play in the Nigerian league.

Although she acknowledged that it is good to see some players taking the matter of equal pay up to the global soccer governing body, Oshoala, who was Nigeria’s assistant captain at France 2019, said there are more pressing issues to tackle first in Africa.

Speaking after returning to training with her club on Wednesday, ahead of the new Liga Iberdrola season which kicks off on September 8, the ex-star of FC Robo in Mushin, Lagos and Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt expatiated that she is not totally against equal pay, but added that she only wants more pressing issues to be tackled as a priority.

Oshoala went on to state categorically that she does not believe that a call for equal pay between male and female players is a top priority for women’s national teams in Africa, where she says they currently have more fundamental problems and structural issues to be resolved.

The former Liverpool and Arsenal Ladies of England player told the Punch: “It is a good thing that this demand caught FIFA’s attention, but I prefer we focus on problems affecting female football in Africa first.

“In Africa, we have other pressing issues to deal with. We need to deal with our structures, facilities, and loads of issues before talking about equal pay.”
