Paris 2024: Super Falcons lose 1-0 to Spain

Date:

Alexia Patellas scored a stunning free-kick to secure a 1-0 victory for Spain over Nigeria in a tightly contested Group C match in Nantes on Sunday.

Nigeria adopted a defensive stance, allowing La Roja to control possession early in the game. Despite Spain’s dominance, they struggled to break through the Nigerian defense, which was solidly anchored by the experienced Osinachi Ohale.

Esther Okoronkwo nearly opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Rasheedat Ajibade set her up, but Spain’s goalkeeper, Cata Coll, made a crucial save to keep the match scoreless.

Just before halftime, Ajibade squandered a prime opportunity. After being played through on goal by Oshoala, she failed to control the ball effectively.

Chiamaka Nnadozie made an impressive save to deny Lucia Garcia in the 45th minute, keeping Nigeria in the game.

In the second half, Spain continued to press, with Salma Paralluello having a goal disallowed for offside in the 53rd minute. Ajibade missed another chance in the 65th minute, firing wide from inside the box.

With 10 minutes left, Osinachi Ohale made a critical block to thwart Aitana Bonmati’s attempt. However, Patellas’ exquisite free-kick in the 85th minute finally breached Nnadozie’s defense, securing the win for Spain.

In stoppage time, substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo had a golden opportunity to equalize for Nigeria but missed the target.

The Super Falcons will next face Japan in their final group match on Wednesday.
