Paris 2024: Super Falcons Olympics hope in tatters after 1-0 defeat to Spain

Date:

Super Falcons are in a critical position at the Paris Olympics, needing a victory over Japan in their final group match and favorable results from other games to have any hope of advancing as one of the best losers in the women’s football tournament.

The Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain on Sunday, marking their second consecutive loss by the same margin.

This setback leaves them at the bottom of Group C. Coach Randy Waldrum’s team struggled with finishing, and Spain’s Alexia Putellas capitalized on a free-kick in the dying minutes to secure the win.

Nigeria’s opening match also ended in a 1-0 loss to Brazil.

In another Group C match, Japan pulled off a dramatic 2-1 victory over Brazil. Momoko Tanikawa scored a stunning 96th-minute goal, completing a comeback after Japan trailed early in the second half.

Captain Saki Kumagai had earlier equalized with a penalty in the 92nd minute.

This result leaves both Japan and Brazil level on three points after two games.
