Head Coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles Jose Peseiro has promised to name squad for the teams dead-rubber 2023 AFCON Qualifier vs Sao Tome and Principe in September.
A 2-3 win over Sierra Leone on Sunday was enough to guarantee Nigeria’s qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be hosted by Ivory Coast.
That notwithstanding, a game vs Sao Tome and Principe awaits to complete the qualifying series.
According to Jose Peseiro, despite the desire to ring changes to the team and afford new players opportunity to fight for a shirt in the team, he will name a strong squad to begin preparations for the 2023 AFCON.
Peseiro said ” We have one national team, and there is time that we can work to improve the team,”
“If I change the team all the time, I will never be able to improve our organization.”
“While we aim to create more dynamics and organization against São Tomé [and Principe], we must consider how these changes will impact our preparations for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON),” the Portuguese manager said.
This will come as a sad news for some Nigeria Super Eagles eligible players who are eyeing the game Vs Sao Tome as perfect opportunity to make their mark.
To this once, Peseiro added “The door to the Super Eagles is open for everybody.”
In a related development, Super Eagles could be without a coach in the next few days as Peseiro’s contract winds down in few days.
At the moment, the Nigeria Football Federation is yet to table a contract extension before Peseiro or reveal their plans for the team.
Jose Peseiro’s contract with the Nigeria national team expires in June 2023.
