Nigeria’s foremost table tennis player, Aruna Quadri justified his rating as number one seed at the 2019 ITTF Challenge Plus Nigeria Open, as he romped to the men’s singles’ title in style.

The Portugal-based Quadri was unbeaten on his wway towards emerging winner of this year’s edition, in which he defeated Robert Gardos of Austria 15-13, 11-3, 15-11, 11-6, 10-12 in the final.

Quadri earlier got the better of India’s Soumyajit Ghosh 4-1 (11-8, 11-5, 11-4, 8-11, 11-4); while Gardos had to dip deep to beat Belgium’s Cédric Nuytinck, the no.2 seed 4-2 (11-3, 7-11, 8-11, 15-13, 13-11, 11-9).

Last weekend’s victory increased Quadri’s Challenge Series titles to three overall, having won the 2018 Nigeria Open and 2017 Polish Open, but the combined duo of Olajide Omotayo and Segun Toriola could only get silver in the men’s doubles.

Russia’s Polina Mikhailova won the women’s singles title and finished as the most successful player of the competition, having earlier in the day partnered Yana Noskova to clinch the women’s doubles as well.
