Rangers’ Second Home Defeat Saddens Ifeanyi George

Rangers International of Enugu attacker, Ifeanyi George has expressed sorrow with the Coal City club’s second home defeat of the season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), but disclosed further that all players in the team have already vowed to storm back stronger in subsequent matches.

George admitted it was a huge setback losing at home again so close to their first match in the group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup, which holds this weekend in Enugu, but stressed that The Flying Antelopes will now rise to the occasion.

While reflecting on the 2-0 setback at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, George confessed in a chat with Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that he never thought his side would lose to NPFL newcomers, Akwa Starlet of Uyo at The Cathedral, and admitted he was sad that his side team alarmingly suffered one of three home defeats recorded on Sunday.

Akwa Starlets gained the weekend’s biggest upset against the Flying Antelopes, while table-topping Plateau United of Jos continued their bright start to the season with a 3-1 away triumph against Delta Force.

Still basking in the glee of their 1-1 draw away to Nasarawa United of Lafia, the 2017 champions conceded first after Kazie Enyinnaya converted his 38th-minute penalty, but The Tin City side then leveled six minutes later through Uche Onwuasoanya before Michael Ibeh and Ibrahim Mustapha’s second-half goals secured maximum points for the visitors from Jos.

However, while Plateau United remain at the summit of the NPFL log with 13 points after five outings, the team that won the league the season before them crumbled like a pack of cards, despite hoping to return to winning ways following an earlier 1-0 defeat at home by Mountain of Fire & Miracles Ministry (MFM) FC of Lagos, as well as last midweek’s 2-1 loss away to Rivers United of Port Harcourt.

However, much to George’s shock, Rangers fell at home to first-half goals from Femi Ajayi and Isaac George, as Akwa Starlets secured their first victory away from home this term, leaving The Flying Antelopes searching for answers.

George revealed: “We are very disappointed with this result. Losing two matches at home is not the best for us, especially this one against a newly promoted side. It’s a disappointment for us, especially coming close  to our continental match, but we just have to get over it. That’s why we will all work hard and ensure that we recover very fast and start winning again.”
