Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, has warned that he and 25 other lawmakers will resign if the Assembly fails to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the ongoing impeachment process.
Amaewhule made the declaration during Thursday’s plenary in Port Harcourt, noting that both Governor Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Ordu, are included in the impeachment plan.
He said it would be preferable for lawmakers to step down rather than allow what he described as attempts by Fubara to short-change the people of Rivers State.

Amaewhule emphasized that the political unrest is not a confrontation between Minister Nyesom Wike and the Governor but a dispute between Fubara and the constitution.
All 26 lawmakers have formally initiated impeachment proceedings, citing gross constitutional violations and describing the Governor as a threat to democratic governance. The notice of impeachment has reportedly been signed by all members involved.
Rivers State has remained politically tense since Fubara’s reinstatement following a six-month suspension. Minister Wike, in a recent statement, said he would not interfere should the lawmakers choose to proceed with the impeachment.
