German coach Gernot Rohr remains optimistic about Benin’s chances as he arrived in Durban with part of the squad ahead of Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.
With Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin leading Group C on seven points each after four matches, Rohr—former Nigeria head coach—believes The Cheetahs have a strong opportunity in a competitive section that also includes Nigeria, currently in fifth place.
“It’s surprising that Benin, Rwanda, and South Africa are leading after four matches in this tough Group C,” Rohr told NationSports upon landing in Durban. “We won our last two games in Abidjan, and now we play away against Zimbabwe before facing South Africa at home on March 25.
“It may be a surprise, but we are here, and we want to stay at the top and do even better.”
Despite his optimism, the former Bayern Munich defender expects a challenging encounter against fourth-placed Zimbabwe, coached by his fellow German, Michael Nees.
“We know it’s going to be difficult in Durban against Zimbabwe, who have already qualified for AFCON 2025,” Rohr noted. “They have a strong team and a good German coach whom I know well.
“Unfortunately, we are missing some key players, especially in central defense, and one of our best forwards is injured. But we will give our best.”
Rohr also acknowledged that Nigeria and South Africa remain favorites in Group C, but insisted nothing is decided yet.
“Nigeria and South Africa are the favorites, and I agree,” he said. “They have quality players, although some are not playing regularly for their clubs due to fitness issues.
“You could say South Africa are especially strong, but we will see. For now, we are preparing well.”
He added that Benin has already begun preparations in Durban, with more players expected to join the squad.
“It was a long journey here with a six-hour layover in Johannesburg before connecting to Durban. We expect four more players to arrive tonight (Sunday),” Rohr concluded.
