Salah sets record for most goals on EPL opening day

Mohamed Salah set a new Premier League record on the opening day of the season with a goal in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Egyptian star converted Dominik Szoboszlai’s pass, sliding the ball past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton to double Liverpool’s lead, which was initially secured by Diogo Jota.

Salah’s goal marked his ninth opening-day strike in the Premier League, surpassing the previous record held by Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, and Alan Shearer.

The 31-year-old has previously scored on the first day against Watford – his Liverpool debut during the 2017/18 season – before going on to score goals against West Ham, Norwich City (2), Leeds United (a hat-trick), and Fulham.

The only time Salah has failed to score on the first day of the season was during 2023/24, when Liverpool drew 1-1 with Chelsea.

The Egypt international now has 14 goal involvements on the opening day of the Premier League season, setting another record in the process.

The game also marked Salah’s 350th appearance for Liverpool – an indicator of his legendary status at Anfield.
