Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has reportedly rejected a bumper €20 million-a-year contract offer from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.
The veteran midfielder’s current contract at the Camp Nou is due to expire at the end of the season and speculation over his future has been rife.
Inter Miami have shown strong interest in signing Busquets, but Barcelona are also keen to retain their captain for another year as per Xavi’s wishes.
However, it appears that Busquets may have other plans in mind as he reportedly declined Al Nassr’s offer due to an unwillingness to play club football in Saudi Arabia.
He has previously stated that he does not wish to play for any other club in Europe apart from Barcelona and could now be looking for either an extension with them or a transfer to the MLS.
A decision on his future is yet to be reached as he has not received an official proposal from Barça.
Busquets has again been an important player for the Catalan giants during the 2022-23 campaign, making 27 appearances in all competitions, contributing one assist in the process.
The midfielder has missed Barcelona’s last two games against Villarreal and Manchester United through injury, but he is back in the squad for Sunday’s La Liga clash with Cadiz.
Busquets’s return is timely for Xavi’s side, who will be without both Pedri (hamstring) and Gavi (suspension) for next week’s Europa League knockout round playoff second leg with Man United.
