Nigeria and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen has made his mark in Europe by scoring goals but to the surprise of football followers, he actually started as a defender.
Osimhen told footballitalia that the first position he played on the field as a footballer was in the defence.
“I was actually a defender!”, he said.
Osimhen touched on his childhood admiration of former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.
“Growing up I started to watch Didier Drogba, how he plays and try to see what makes a lot of people consider him as one of the greatest strikers to ever play this game.”
Victor Osimhen reflected on Napoli’s thrilling 5-1 win over Juventus and expressed how it felt to play where Diego Maradona once did.
The 24-year-old Nigerian forward has been one of the stars of the show in Luciano Spalletti’s squad this season, scoring 18 goals and providing four assists across 19 Serie A games this season.
Osimhen has emerged as one of the most talented strikers in Europe and is on track to guide Napoli to their first Scudetto in over three decades.
Speaking to Napoli’s media department, Osimhen first revealed his fondest memory in the Campania capital so far.
“I think the game against Juventus was extraordinary. It was an amazing performance from the whole squad. I think the win will stay with us forever.”
He was then asked how it felt to play in the same stadium as Argentina legend Maradona.
“Maradona is the greatest player to ever play this game, so to step on the pitch where he made history, for me I think there’s no better feeling than this.”
The Nigerian striker had no doubts when asked about his favourite Napoli legend.
“Everyone’s favourite, of course, Maradona.”
