Two former Super Eagles’ strikers got back into the spotlight with bold claims for invitations into the next Nigerian national team’s squad list for the resumption of action in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, next month against Sierra Leone, as Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo (Simy) was on song for Crotone of Italy and Anthony Nwakaeme continued his bull’s eye surge with Trabzonspor of Turkey. gathered that, while Nwakaeme continues making waves alongside John Mikel Obi in the Turkish Super Lig, it is a revival of sort for ‘Simy’ in the lower cadre Italian Serie B, where he struck another heartwarming goal on Saturday.

In Italy, ‘Simy’ was the hero for promotion chasers Crotone, as he scored the winning goal in their 1-0 win over Cremonese to brighten their chances of sealing an automatic ticket back to the Elite League, reports.

Without a win and goal in his last two league appearances, the 27-year-old ‘Simy’ started his 21st league match of the campaign with the host hoping to halt their two games losing streak against a team lacking in confidence after failing to win any of their last 7 games.

Despite holding 72% of possession in the first 45 minutes, the hosts failed to find a way through, as their opponents sat pretty deep in defense with both teams going into the break goalless, but ‘Simy’ broke the deadlock three minutes from full time, with an assist from Mattia Mustacchio, to fire home the game’s only goal, thus grabbing his 10th league goal of the campaign.

In Turkey, Nwakaeme sent strong signs to Eagles’ Coach Gernot Rohr ahead of next month’s doubleheader against Sierra Leone when he scored for the 4th time in three games to help Trabzonspor to a 2-0 win away at Genclerbirligi, reports.

Having been benched for their midweek cup win over BB Erzurumspor, Mikel returned to the starting eleven, as he continued in his lone man defensive midfield role with the visitors going in search of their 12th win of the campaign.

The first half failed to produce any goals, with Trabzonspor needing to wait till the 75th minute for the breakthrough when Jose Sosa converted from 12 yards for 1-0, after which Nwakaeme doubled the lead seven minutes from time, when he fired home from inside the box.

While Nwakame’s eighth league goal of the campaign helped Trabzonspor go joint-top of the table, level on points with Sivasspor, the former Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel striker was named man of the match, with a rating of 8.2.
