The Portuguese tactician is expected to take over after the Africa Cup of Nations, but the interim coach has already set the record straight ahead of his arrival
Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen has revealed that he remains the boss of Jose Peserio ahead of the Portuguese tactician’s arrival.
Peseiro is expected to take over from Eguavoen after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after he was appointed as the permanent replacement for Gernot Rohr.
Although Eguavoen will be in charge of the team in Cameroon as interim boss, Peseiro is expected to watch the team as an observer.
And ahead of his arrival, Eguavoen has revealed that he remains the boss even before and after the Super Eagles campaign in Cameroon.
The 56-year-old tactician said this ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON 2021 opener against Egypt at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium on Tuesday evening.
“I can say, I’m the boss of the new coach, and we have been talking, Eguavoen said at his press conference ahead of the game.
The former Gent defender will return to his role as the head of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical department after the competition. Still, he revealed he has been talking to Peseiro about his ideas for the team.
“Collaboration is good. Anything we are doing here, it’s important we build a team for him to continue when he takes over and add his own style.”
Eguavoen has been in this position before when he led the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2006 AFCON.
However, he will hope to go two steps better and hand over a winning team to Peseiro in February.
