The Super Eagles of Nigeria have now turned their focus to a high-stakes World Cup playoff final against Congo, following dramatic semifinal victories for both sides in Morocco.

Neither team had it easy. Nigeria was pushed to extra time by Gabon, while Congo waited until the 91st minute to break a stalemate and seal their place in the final.

With a spot in the intercontinental playoff just one win away, Sunday’s clash represents the Super Eagles’ toughest test yet in their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

Nigeria heads into the final brimming with confidence after a commanding 4–1 extra-time triumph over Gabon. Victor Osimhen’s decisive brace and Chidera Ejuke’s lively display highlighted the performance, signalling a return of attacking sharpness and belief for the 2024 AFCON finalists. Despite earlier inconsistencies in the qualifiers, the victory has reinforced the camp’s conviction that the Super Eagles can finish the job.

Congo, meanwhile, booked their place in the final by edging Cameroon in a tense semifinal encounter. The Congolese showed discipline, compact defending and strong counter-attacking play – all qualities that the Nigerian team must take seriously. With the likes of Cedric Bakambu and Nathaniel Nbumku leading Congo’s frontline, the Super Eagles’ backline will need full concentration to avoid costly lapses.

On paper, Nigeria hold the stronger squad, with Osimhen, Akor Adams, Alex Iwobi and Benjamin Frederick all in top form and ready to influence the battle. Their experience at major tournaments and consistency at club level give the Super Eagles a slight edge heading into the decisive encounter, alongside the way they managed to manage the pressure that the team suffered versus Gabon.

Although the Super Eagles will be without Wilfred Ndidi due to yellow card accumulation, coach Eric Chelle is expected to call on either Raphael Onyedika or Frank Onyeka to fill the midfield void.

Additionally, Semi Ajayi, who served a suspension in the Gabon clash, is in contention to feature for some minutes on Sunday.

Victor Osimhen will need to tread carefully to avoid picking up a card, as all cautions carry over until the start of the World Cup tournament.

The final will once again be played on neutral ground in Morocco, meaning neither side will enjoy home advantage, adding an extra layer of tactical intrigue to the encounter.
