Super Eagles will Shock the Nation in Egypt — Omerua

Nigeria international defender Kenneth Omerua said that the Super Eagles can win the 2019 AFCON set to take place in Egypt this summer.

Omerua has 41 caps to his name and was part of the Nigeria squad that lifted the 2013 AFCON title in South Africa. He also represented the Super Eagles in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The 25-year-old joined Chelsea in 2012 coming from Belgium’s Standard de Liege. Even after winning the U21 Premier League he wasn’t able to cement his place in the first team.

He joined his fair share of European clubs, on loan, including, Middlesborough, Kasimpasa and finally Leganes.

Omeruo said that Nigeria has a very young and talented squad and are able to win the tournament.

“I think we have what it takes to win AFCON. We have a good team,
“We can get to the final and even win the tournament. It is just that, we will take every game as it comes with the seriousness it deserves.”

Nigeria secured their place in the upcoming AFCON as they sit first in their group with 10 points and one game to spare. Their final game will be against the Seychelles.

Kenneth Omeruo has heaped praises on Michael Essien for playing a big role in his career especially when he met him at Chelsea.

The Nigerian defender joined the West London side in 2012 from Belgian giants Standard Liege, but he is yet to make his first team appearance for the club, having played on loan for six different European clubs.

The 25-year-old has recounted the good moments he had with Michael Essien and the impact his association with the Ghanaian made in his life.

“Michael Emenalo was someone I could speak to at Chelsea when I was newly signed by the club,” he said.

“He is a Nigerian and was the Sport Director that signed me. So, of course, he played a big role in my coming to Chelsea.

“And my biggest influence from Chelsea would definitely be Michael Essien. It is definitely him,” he added.

Kenneth Omeruo was again shipped out on loan to Spanish side CD Leganes in the summer – where he has established himself as vital cog for the side in the La Liga.
