With the 9th edition of the FIFA Women world set to take centre stage in Australia and Zealand, Super Falcons and Levante Las Planas Centre back Onome Ebi will be eyeing her 6th world cup appearance having featured in previous five viz 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 and 2019.
Super Falcons as regular customers have featured in every edition of the women world cup since inception in 1991 with Onome keying in beginning from the fourth edition in 2003 in USA. Onome who turned 40 May 8 2023 will no doubt be hoping to crown her year with perhaps an impressive run at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in July.
Super Falcons begin tournament with the opener against Canada July 21, face hosts Australia July 27 before closing the group stage with Republic of Ireland July 31.
All the editions she participated in have ended in the group stage except the last edition in France which saw the team exit at the round of 16 after losing 3-0 to Germany.
Will she and her teammates be aiming for another round of 16 finish or be eying the best outing the team has recorded so far in eight appearances the quarterfinals of 1999 in USA.
Onome no doubt has done well for herself flagging off her career with Bayelsa Queens and going ahead to play in Turkey, China, Sweden, Belarus and Spain, pocketing several league laurels along the line.
Onome certainly has reason to celebrate her fourth floor birthday in style. A regular at the Africa Women Championship which some have dubbed the Super Falcons birthright because of the number of times the team has won the tournament until recently when winning is longer come with eyes closed .
As she eyes more caps ahead of the World Cup it will be safe to say Onome Ebi has indeed paid her dues, so when you see her tickling the fancy of her over 151,000 fans on social media with impressive photo shoots among other displays to mark 40th birthday celebration, just agree that she indeed has every cause to celebrate and she did not fail to acknowledge your well wishes via @EBIONOME
