Super Falcons Receive Boost From Envoy In Algeria

Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons have received a massive boost in their hopes of making it to the women football event of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, following soothing words from Nigeria’s charge d’affaires in Algeria, Muritala Jimoh.

While addressing the team at a reception in Algiers, Jimoh praised the players for their 2-0 win against their hosts, as Nigeria won the first leg of their Tokyo 2020 qualifier in Blida, which the envoy noted means the second leg at Agege Stadium, Lagos on Tuesday should be easier.

Jimoh said it was good to see another gold medal coming for Nigeria from the Falcons, who will fly to Lagos on Friday and begin preparations for the return leg against the Algerians, who will also land same day.

He also applauded the efforts of the ladies, who shot ahead from an own goal by the Algerians in the 14th minute, before Amarachi Okoronkwo got the second in the 53rd minute, which Jimoh said gave Nigeria some consolation from the Super Eagles’ 2-1 loss to the same country during the semi-finals of the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Jimoh eulogised, saying: “You played very well and made us proud. The 2-0 victory made us walk very tall and will give us bragging right for some time to come.”

In response, leader of delegation, Alhaji Yusuf Ahmed Fresh, who is the chairman of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee, thanked Jimoh and other officials for the reception and assured that the Falcons will complete the job in Lagos on Tuesday.

“The 2-0 win here stands us in very good stead to reach the next round. But the Falcons will not under-rate the Algerians.

“They will be business-like and aim to conclude the fixture quickly so they can focus on the next round in the qualifying series,” Fresh said.
