Super Falcons Set To Battle Korea In Grenoble

Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons on Sunday left Reims, France, where they lost 3-0 to Norway in their opening match of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, as the squad flew out to Grenoble, where they will battle South Korea on Wednesday.

It will be a clash between two sides that lost their opening games, as Korea fell 4-0 to France in the competition’s first match on Friday, thus leaving the Asians behind the three-time African champions, who say they have picked up the pieces from their loss to Norway.

This much was revealed in a post on social media by the Falcons’ media unit, which admitted that Saturday’s defeat by Norway was a huge blow to the players’ psyche, but added that they will bounce back stronger.

The message came after Norway lashed the African champions in both team’s opening match of France 2019 in Reims.

Guro Reiten scored in the 17th minute as the Super Falcons failed to deal with a corner kick, and Lisa-Marie Utland made it two 17 minutes later when she flashed a fierce shot past goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi from close range.

The Falcons were overwhelmed in the encounter and this showed as defender Osinachi Ohale put the ball into her own net in an attempt to steer the ball away as the Scandinavians again threatened from the left side of the Nigerian defence.

Falcons’ coach, Thomas Dennerby introduced Chinaza Uchendu, Chidinma Okeke and Uchenna Kanu in the second half, with high hopes of doing much better, which they did.

However, although there appeared to be some aspiration in the forwardline, the Falcons could not put their passes together with conviction to trouble the Norwegians.

Nigeria will now take on Korea Republic in Grenoble on Wednesday, ahead of which the Falcons’ media crew enthused that Nigerians are assured of a better outing by the team.

The post read: “@NGSuper_Falcons bowed to Norway in its opening @FIFAWWC match on Saturday.

“We’ve moved on and aim to put up a much better showing in our second #FIFAWWC game against South Korea in Grenoble on Wednesday.   #Team9jaStrong  #DareToShine #NGA.”
